Biography of Dr. Ajeenkya D. Patil

Ajeenkya Patil Receives Honorary Doctorate from University of Central Lancashire, United Kingdom. The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) based in Preston, UK has conferred upon Mr. Ajeenkya D. Patil an Honorary Doctorate as a recognition of his outstanding work in the fields of education & healthcare on Friday, 13 July 2007 at Preston.

The University of Central Lancashire is pleased to award an Honorary Doctorate to Ajeenkya Dnyandeo Patil in recognition of his work as both an entrepreneur and an educationalist.

Dr. Ajeenkya D. Patil was born on 22 December 1971. As a child, he had a curiosity for technology and innovation. After graduating from the University of Mumbai, he went on to complete his business degree at Richmond College and an advanced course in marketing at the London School of Economics. At a very young age, he demonstrated determination and dedication juxtaposed with compassion and care through his dynamic leadership. He is the Chairman of the D Y Patil Group, founded by his father and a great visionary, Dr D. Y. Patil- Recipient of Padmashree.

Education remaining his core commitment, he also takes keen interest in fields such as sustainable development, healthcare, information-communication-technology, media, hospitality, and agriculture to name a few. He is a Founder President of Dr D. Y. Patil International Academy, promoted to create Institutes of Excellence through collaborations with internationally renowned universities. Delivery of collaborative University of Central Lancashire programmes in India is a classic success story of this endeavour. Besides higher education, this Academy has also promoted one of India’s finest K-12 International Schools in the name of Sharad Pawar International School. These are some of the many firsts that he has initiated in order to fulfil his dream to provide international quality education to deserving students in India.

In 2005, he was nominated as Chairman of Central Board of Workers’ Education (CBWE) under the Union Ministry of Labour, for the Government of India with status and privileges as a Minister of State. As its Chairman, he has set out to develop a sense of patriotism among the work force to ensure more intelligent participation by the work force; to develop greater understanding of the personal and social issues; to work with trade unions through conscious members and responsible internal leadership; to strengthen cooperative movement and self help techniques and to bring out the hidden creative capacities of work force.

In 2006, Dr. Ajeenkya D. Patil accepted an invitation to set up an International School and a University under Royal Charter extended by the Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras al Khaimah, in UAE, who was impressed with his visionary leadership and success in creating excellence in education. In February 2007, he was nominated to International Baccalaureate Organisation Development Council based in Geneva, Switzerland. Recently, he was also invited by University of Mumbai to become its Senate member. He is also trustee of many educational and philanthropic trusts and societies.

He spearheads the healthcare division of the D Y Patil Group, which has the motto: Compassion, Care, Cure. Dr D. Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre is a world class 750 beds hospital with state-of-art diagnostic and analytic equipments and hospital information system. The hospital, which has 14 specialist areas, provides treatments to on average 1,100 out patients daily and about 39,000 in patients annually on charity.

He strongly believes that sustainable development can only happen by investing in revolutionary technologies in agriculture. He has encouraged research and development in the fields of biotechnology and bioinformatics. Through research encouraged by him, many farmers in Kolhapur have benefited by an increase in production of sugarcanes and decrease in cost of production. He encourages use of natural and eco-friendly technologies in agriculture.

Even at this young age, he spends more time in discharging his social responsibilities than in business, philanthropy is close to his heart. Dr. Ajeenkya D. Patil is a member of Chakrayu Foundation engaged in charities for the poor and the needy in the State of Maharashtra. Social causes close to his heart are, among others, eradication of child labour, female child education, upliftment of the physically challenged.

He is a member of Vijay Merchant Centre of the disabled. In recognition of his relentless pursuit of social cause, Professor Lord Patel of Bradford and Mrs Cherie Booth, QC, invited him to the World Water Day event in the House of Lords in March. There he announced his support to their initiatives to provide fresh potable water and clean sanitation system to people in India and Africa by instituting a special foundation for the same. He has received many recognitions and awards from leading organisations and illustrious personalities for his achievement and success in business.

In recognition of his work in supporting people not only in his own country, India, but also in supporting the University in developing its international collaborations, the University of Central Lancashire is pleased to present an Honorary Doctorate to Ajeenkya Dnyandeo Patil and considers him to be an ideal role model for its students within the Faculty of Science and Technology.

On 13th February 2009 Dr. Ajeenkya D. Patil has assumed the charge of Pro- Chancellor of D.Y. Patil University, Navi Mumbai.
